Should I Stay Or Should I Go Now? Or why I’m walking away from my Etsy shop… for now

December 27, 2018 by Robin @ Imperial Crochet

With 2018 drawing to a close, I’m re-evaluating all of my current online projects and deciding where I want to focus my attention in 2019.

The indecision’s been bugging me for a  while now and I’ve decided to start making some small positive changes that I truly hope will allow me to direct attention onto creative writing projects that will bring me greater satisfaction in the long run.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I have way too many coals in the fire right now which clash with each other sending my mind racing off in all different directions.  I never know where to start in the morning and I get very little, if anything productive at all, done by the end of the day.  That’s why I’ve decided that I need to scale back in a few places while I decide exactly whom I’m supposed to be… and where I want to go with my writing career.

What to Keep?  What to Toss?

It’s all about deciding which box to place things in!

The first thing I’ve chosen to go is my Etsy shop.  I love to crochet but I realize I prefer to do it at my own pace and for my own people.  I started crocheting as a way to relax.  Selling my cozy creations actually became stressful for me and not being a very good photographer, I really don’t enjoy listing products.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Etsy.  I just think in 2019 I’d rather be an Etsy customer than a shopkeeper.  I may change my mind again at some time in the future but for now, I’ve decided to pull my products and concentrate my crochet efforts in a more personal manner.

At the other end of the skein, the first thing I’ve decided to keep is this blog… at least for a little while.  I love the crochet friends I’ve met here and I enjoy sharing my crochet creations with people who appreciate them. I love seeing crocheted things made by other crocheters and I also love looking for crochet-inspired gift ideas so, I’m planning my future posts to be about things I’m making for friends, family, and myself, reviews of crochet items and patterns I love as well as interesting gifts that can be found at Etsy where I will remain an affiliate for the time being.

Of course, there are lots more decisions I need to make in order to refocus my time if I want to become more successful as a writer.  I’ll keep you posted on that.

How about you?  Do you have any big changes planned for the coming year?  Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section.  I LOVE hearing from my readers.

PS… Don’t worry.  No cats were harmed in the making of this post and no one is being shipped out.   They’re both staying.  We love them.

I’m going through the same sorts of decisions. I guess it’s that time of year?

  2. I can totally understand why you want to close your Etsy shop. It can be stressful and time consuming! Good luck in 2019!

  3. I can understand the decision to close the shop. As mentioned before ⬆️ as a somewhat small, unknown seller it’s all but impossible to get noticed. 😕 Plus I hate writing the listings 😆
Good luck with everything you put your focus on & Happy New Year all around 😊💕
I have a few ideas for this year floating around in my head. My blog is on the top of the list, then crochet (of course 😁) and maybe some painting.

  4. That is great and I’m glad you were able to make a decision. I’m trying to promote my Etsy shop but like other have said, it’s tough to compete with the big guys.

Good luck with your amazing goals for 2019!!!!
